Agricultural Land Use Inventory Underway in the CRD

The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in partnership with the Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC, will be conducting an Agricultural Land Use Inventory (ALUI) across the Capital Regional District (CRD) from June 16 to June 27, 2025.

This initiative helps the Province and local governments better understand current farming activity and land use patterns, especially within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

🔍 What to Expect
Professional Agrologists and GIS technicians will be making visual observations from public roads. Survey crews will be in marked vehicles displaying “Ministry of Agriculture and Food” or “Government of BC” signage. They may make frequent stops between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

These observations will assist in confirming details about:

  • Crop types and irrigation
  • Natural vegetation
  • Livestock and farm infrastructure
  • Other observable land uses

📊 How the Data Will Be Used
Information collected through the ALUI helps:

  • Model climate change impacts and adaptation strategies
  • Estimate current and future agricultural water demand
  • Support Official Community Plans and Agricultural Area Plans
  • Monitor farming activity and changes to ALR land use
  • Evaluate impacts of new developments or regulations on agriculture
