Campfire Prohibition in Effect for North Saanich
Effective 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, July 16, Category 1 campfires are now prohibited in North Saanich under the BC Wildfire Service’s Coastal Fire Centre restrictions. Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited. The prohibition is expected to remain in effect until October 31, 2026, unless rescinded earlier.
Fire categories:
- Category 1: Campfires no larger than 0.5 m x 0.5 m (typical campsite or backyard campfire).
- Category 2: Debris burning in one or two piles up to 2 m high by 3 m wide, or grass/stubble burning up to 0.2 hectares.
- Category 3: Large-scale burning, including three or more piles, piles larger than 2 m x 3 m, windrows, or grass/stubble burning over 0.2 hectares.
Residents are urged to use caution during the current dry conditions.
Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000, or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced for up to one year in jail.
