District of North Saanich Approves Harvest Hub Project to Strengthen Local Agriculture
North Saanich, BC — The District of North Saanich Council has approved the Harvest Hub project, a new community-focused food hub facility that will support local agriculture and food production across the Saanich Peninsula, thanks to a generous donation of $750,000 from Gregory Warner. The donation plays a significant role in advancing a community harvest and food-hub vision that North Saanich has been working toward since 2010. With Council’s support, the project will now move into pre-construction planning and early procurement activities.
The Harvest Hub will provide a shared-use facility that enhances local farmers’, producers’ and food processors’ capacity by offering essential services such as storage, processing infrastructure, and potentially future expanded programming that increases access to local markets. This initiative reflects the District’s strategic priority to focus on local agriculture and support food production systems.
The approved project charter includes engaging a qualified proponent to begin the pre-construction phase, ensuring design, procurement and scheduling are put in place with an eye toward efficiency and value. The initial planning anticipates completion by late 2026, with compressed timelines identified as a priority to accelerate community benefit.
“The Harvest Hub represents a meaningful investment in our agricultural community, helping local producers thrive, innovate, and access new opportunities,” said North Saanich Mayor Peter Jones. “Made possible through the generosity of Gregory Warner, this facility will serve as a vital resource that strengthens local food systems while reflecting a deep respect for North Saanich’s agricultural heritage and future. On behalf of Council and residents, we are sincerely grateful for his leadership and vision in helping bring the Harvest Hub to life.”
The District launched a dedicated Harvest Hub project page to provide ongoing information, updates, and opportunities for community participation.
