Galaran/Beacon Ave West roundabout – more details available online

The Town of Sidney, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the District of North Saanich and Victoria Airport Authority to build a roundabout at the intersection of Beacon Avenue West and Galaran Road, has published a project web page.

The estimated cost for the roundabout project is $4.9 million, which will be shared by the three partners. The Town of Sidney and Victoria Airport Authority will each contribute 40% of project costs, with the District of North Saanich covering the remaining 20%.

It is anticipated that the roundabout will improve traffic flow and facilitate fewer delays when moving through the area.

The intersection, though located in Sidney, is one through which many North Saanich residents travel, sometimes daily.

In the absence of shops like pharmacies, grocery stores, and other major consumer and health services in North Saanich, residents often travel to Sidney to have these needs met, and often through the intersection of Beacon Avenue W. and Galaran Road.

Traffic also flows from Sidney to North Saanich. Consequently, once the roundabout is built, it is expected North Saanich businesses will have better access for their customers and employees. North Saanich residents are also expected to experience fewer delays for vehicle traffic and improved and safer routes for walking and cycling.

The need for a roundabout at this intersection had been identified approximately 20 years ago, well before development plans for the Amazon Distribution Centre.

In the past two decades, significant growth—with a resulting increase in traffic—has occurred in this area, which encompasses Sidney, North Saanich, and Victoria Airport Authority lands.

Recent development includes the Sobeys Retail Support Centre, air hangars on Mills Road, the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) Response Base, Slegg Building Materials, Scotty Manufacturing Ltd., Titan Boats, Canadian Tire, and various other businesses in the Sidney Industrial Area.

As the roundabout project develops, details of the design and other information will be featured on the project page, at:

A news release, published on March 15, 2022, provides more details about the roundabout.
