Permissive Tax Exemptions
Under Section 224 of the Community Charter , Council may choose to grant property tax exemptions to not-for-profit and other organizations. Exemptions are applied to the taxes of the following year(s) as described in the approved policy.
Exemptions are at the discretion of Council according to Council’s Permissive Tax Exemption Policy, and are subject to the availability of sufficient funding within the District’s annual budget. Exemptions are generally intended for non-profit organizations which provide a direct economic, social, or cultural benefit to the community.
Applications for a 2023 permissive tax exemption are due no later than August 31, 2022. Even if the organization has received an exemption in the prior year, they are required to apply for a 2023 exemption using the application form:
