A Reminder to Our Community: Respect and Civility at Council Meetings

To Our North Saanich Residents,

We want to take a moment to reaffirm our commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone who participates in council meetings. Our council chambers should be a space where open discussions happen with respect and civility, free from bullying, intimidation, or disruptive behavior.

Unfortunately, at last night’s meeting, a small number of community members in attendance engaged in disrespectful behavior directed at council, staff, and fellow attendees. These members were asked to cease their disrespectful behavior or leave the meeting. Despite multiple reminders about the importance of respectful communication, the behavior continued even after a recess was called. Ensuring a safe space for all present was our priority.

We encourage and welcome public participation—whether through attending meetings, corresponding with council, or sharing feedback on important issues. However, this must always be done constructively and respectfully. A strong community is built on mutual respect, and it’s up to all of us to uphold that standard.

As a reminder, we have signage in council chambers outlining our expectations for respectful and productive interactions:

🔹 What This Means

No profanity, yelling, offensive gestures, or personal insults.

No name-calling, belittling, or intimidating behavior.

Disruptive or disrespectful conduct may result in removal from the meeting.

These guidelines align with the District of North Saanich’s Respectful Workplace Policy (No. COU-061) and exist to maintain a space where all voices can be heard in a constructive manner.

Our community thrives when we engage in meaningful dialogue with kindness and consideration. Thank you for helping us keep North Saanich a place where everyone feels welcome.

The District of North Saanich

“The land where it is good to be.”
