North Saanich Fire Department now recruiting volunteer firefighters
The North Saanich Fire Department is inviting healthy, physically fit, and service-oriented people from the community, whether veteran firefighters or those without any public safety experience, to apply to join its volunteer firefighting team.
A new class of North Saanich volunteer firefighting recruits will start orientation and training in fall, 2022. An information session will be held in August 2022.
The North Saanich Fire Department welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, recognizing that the varied personal skills and experiences individuals bring to the department can make a significant and positive difference at emergency scenes.
The North Saanich Fire Department is a composite department, with six full-time members employed by the District of North Saanich. The majority of firefighters in the department are volunteers.
As an integral part of the department, volunteer firefighters are responsible for extinguishing fires, responding to calls as medical first responders, protecting life and property, and operating and maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus, and quarters.
Successful applicants to the volunteer program will be provided with the equipment and support needed to complete the internationally recognized NFPA 1001 – Firefighter I & II training course, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the functions of a front-line firefighter.
This training is a combination of classroom instruction and practical application. At the end of training (14-16 months), recruits in the North Saanich Fire Department program will complete a written and practical exam that will certify them as a full-service firefighter.
The North Saanich Fire Department serves the District of North Saanich, as well as providing mutual aid to the Town of Sidney, the District of Central Saanich, and the Victoria International Airport when they experience significant emergency incidents.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the North Saanich Fire Department. The Fire Department will host an open house to commemorate the milestone on Saturday, August 27, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Wain Road Fire Hall.
