Storm Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Be Prepared for Storms and Power Outages
Storms can occur suddenly and with intense force, leading to unexpected power outages. To ensure your safety and readiness, residents are strongly advised to maintain a home emergency kit.
Your kit should include:
- Non-perishable food (enough for at least three days)
- Water (one gallon per person per day)
- Battery-powered flashlight and radio
- Extra batteries
- First-aid kit and essential medications
- Copies of important documents (e.g., emergency plan, insurance papers)
- Garbage bags and moist towelettes
- Seasonal clothing, sturdy footwear, and an emergency blanket
Remember to tailor your kit to include personal items such as pet supplies and prescription medications. After using any items from your emergency kit, make it a priority to replenish them as soon as possible.

Downed Power Lines: Critical Safety Information
In the event of a downed power line, which poses a severe danger:
- Assume all fallen lines are live. Even if they are not sparking or making noise, consider them highly dangerous.
- Stay Back: Maintain a distance of at least 10 metres (33 feet) from the downed line, approximately the length of a city bus.
- Call for Help: Immediately dial 911 and report the fallen or damaged power line.
- Keep Others Safe: Ensure that others in the vicinity remain at least a bus-length away from the hazard.
Your safety is paramount. During storm conditions, always stay informed and practice caution. For any emergencies, dial 911.
