Property Tax Penalties & Interest

Penalty on Overdue Taxes

Outstanding balances (including outstanding Home Owner Grants) are subject to penalty. For 2020, the District is postponing the penalty dates for property tax payments. While the due date for property taxes remains July 2, residential and farm properties have until end of day July 31 to pay before a 3% penalty is applied on August 1, 2020. An additional penalty of 7% will be applied to unpaid balances on October 1, 2020. Commercial properties in classes 4 thru 8 now have until end of day September 30 to pay before a 10% penalty is applied on October 1, 2020. Aside from the penalties, no additional interest will be charged on outstanding taxes until January 1st of the following year.

Interest on Arrears Taxes

Property taxes are considered to be in arrears on January 1st of the following year of being overdue. If your taxes are still outstanding as of this date, interest will be charged at a rate set by the Province and updated quarterly.

Interest on Delinquent Taxes

Property taxes are considered to be delinquent on January 1st of the 2nd year of being overdue. If your taxes are still outstanding as of this date, interest will continue to be charged at a rate set by the Province and updated quarterly.

Tax Sale

On the last Monday of September, in the year which property taxes become delinquent, the property will go to public auction if delinquent taxes, including interest, remain unpaid.
