Property Tax Penalties & Interest

Penalty on Overdue Taxes

Outstanding balances (including outstanding Home Owner Grants) are subject to penalty. For 2024, the due date for property taxes is July 2. After July 2, a 5% penalty will be applied to unpaid amounts. A second penalty of 5% will be added at the end of day October 1. Aside from the penalties, no additional interest will be charged on outstanding taxes until January 1 of the following year.

Interest on Arrears Taxes

Property taxes are considered to be in arrears on January 1 of the following year of being overdue. If your taxes are still outstanding as of this date, interest will be charged at a rate set by the Province and updated quarterly.

Please note that balances may include unpaid Utilities from the previous year.

Interest on Delinquent Taxes

Property taxes are considered to be delinquent on January 1 of the second year of being overdue. If your taxes are still outstanding as of this date, interest will continue to be charged at a rate set by the Province and updated quarterly.

Tax Sale

On the last Monday of September, in the year which property taxes become delinquent, the property will go to public auction if delinquent taxes, including interest and any penalties, remain unpaid.

In 2024, the last Monday in September falls on National Truth and Reconciliation Day and so the annual tax sale will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024.
